Before the Storm

There's something magical about the early morning hours, especially when you're out in nature with a camera in hand. This morning, I decided to rise with the sun and head to one of my favorite spots, Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. The forecast predicted a storm rolling in later in the day, so I knew I had a limited window to capture the serene beauty before the weather turned.

As the first light of dawn began to illuminate the landscape, I found myself surrounded by a symphony of bird songs. The air was cool and crisp, and a gentle mist hovered over the water, adding an ethereal quality to the scene. Armed with my Sony A9III and my new 300mm 2.8 lens, I was ready to capture whatever wildlife came my way.

The variety of birds at Lake Apopka never ceases to amaze me. I spotted Great Blue Herons, Anhingas, and countless smaller wading birds, all going about their morning routines. The stillness of the early morning made it easy to get close without disturbing them, allowing for some truly intimate shots.

As I wandered further along the drive, I stumbled upon a dramatic and somewhat grisly scene. An alligator, lurking just below the surface, suddenly surged upward and caught an unsuspecting bird in its powerful jaws. It was a stark reminder of the circle of life and the raw, untamed beauty of nature. The sound of the bird's distress calls echoed across the water, and I could hear other birds responding with alarmed cries from nearby reeds.

Despite the impending storm, the morning remained calm and filled with incredible photo opportunities. I took advantage of the soft, diffused light to capture some stunning images of the birds in their natural habitat. The anticipation of the approaching storm added a sense of urgency and excitement to my shoot, knowing that these moments of tranquility would soon give way to the fury of nature.

As the first dark clouds began to gather on the horizon, I reluctantly packed up my gear and headed back. The experience of photographing birds in the early morning light, witnessing the raw power of nature, and hearing the chorus of life around me was both humbling and exhilarating.

There's a unique beauty in capturing these fleeting moments, knowing that each photograph tells a story of a specific time and place. This morning's adventure at Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive was a perfect reminder of why I love getting up early and immersing myself in the natural world, camera in hand.

Until next time, keep exploring and capturing the wild wonders around you.
