Sunrise at Lake Apopka

There's something magical about waking up before dawn and heading to Lake Apopka Wilderness Drive for sunrise photography. Even though driving through this stunning location is reserved for weekends, walking the deserted road on weekdays offers a serene and peaceful experience that's truly unmatched.

As the first light begins to break, I make my way down the quiet path, my Leica Q3 in hand. The calmness of the morning is palpable, with only the soft sounds of nature to accompany me. The horizon starts to glow with hues of pink and orange, and I find the perfect spot by the water to capture the reflection of the sky. The stillness of the water mirrors the vibrant colors, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene that seems almost surreal.

With the sun rising higher, the lake comes to life. Birds begin their morning routines, flitting and playing across the water's surface. The tranquility of the moment is perfect for capturing the serene landscape, each shot a testament to the peaceful beauty of nature waking up.

Then, with my Sony A9III and 200-600mm lens ready, I spot a Great Blue Heron. It stands tall and majestic, its keen eyes scanning the water for breakfast. With a quick, decisive motion, it snatches a fish from the water. I manage to capture the exact moment the heron holds its catch, the fish wriggling in its beak. The clarity and detail of the shot bring the scene to life, highlighting the grace and skill of this incredible bird.

These early morning excursions to Lake Apopka remind me why I love photography. The solitude of the deserted road, the quiet moments of reflection, and the excitement of capturing wildlife in action all come together to create an unforgettable experience. Every sunrise offers a new perspective, and I can't wait to see what the next one will bring.
