A Journey from Bibury to Broadway

After an amazing time exploring the hidden gem of Sheepscombe, we set off for one of the Cotswolds' most iconic spots, "Broadway." But first, we couldn’t resist making a detour to the charming village of Bibury. This picture-perfect location has caught the eye of filmmakers over the years, featuring in films like Bridget Jones's Diary and Stardust. With its honey-colored stone cottages and meandering stream, it’s no wonder Bibury is a favorite of directors and tourists alike.

Pro-tip: If you're planning a visit, aim for a weekday at the crack of dawn to beat the crowds. We stopped by for an early breakfast at The Swan Inn—a lovely location but, unfortunately, not the best experience for us that morning. Our server seemed to be having an off day, forgetting half of our order and then us altogether! Still, breakfast mishap aside, we enjoyed exploring the village’s quaint charm, though I would have preferred even more of an early start to avoid the sea of tourists.

While photo ops were scarce due to the crowd, I seized the moment and turned my lens toward the local wildlife—capturing some graceful swans and playful ducks swimming along the River Coln, which winds its way through the village. A serene and unexpected delight amidst the bustling scene.

Next, we continued our journey through the Cotswolds' winding roads toward Broadway. On the way, we spotted the majestic Broadway Tower, standing tall on a hill, keeping watch over the town below. Broadway itself is a bustling little hub, yet its charm feels organic. We were welcomed into a cozy home right in the heart of the village, greeted with a selection of locally-made jams, honey, and delicious treats—a lovely touch that made us feel instantly at home.

Broadway's shops are irresistible, offering everything from British-made clothing to quirky gifts. And, of course, we couldn't pass up a stop at the town's famous chocolate shop, where, as the locals say, “it’s always chocolate o’clock!” We indulged and treated ourselves to some delectable sweets before heading to Broadway Tower. One of my favorite memories was photographing the deer that live near the tower—such a peaceful and beautiful spot to unwind with nature.

For anyone visiting Broadway, don’t miss a trip to Bourton-on-the-Water. Known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds," this village is famous for its ancient stone walking bridges that crisscross the River Windrush, providing perfect photo opportunities. The highlight, though, had to be a visit to The Bakery on the Water. Their pastries were among the best we tasted during our time in the Cotswolds—flaky, fresh, and absolutely delicious.

A short drive from Bourton are the picturesque villages of Lower and Upper Slaughter. These small villages are the essence of rural tranquility and are more than worth a visit if you’re after a quiet escape from the busier tourist spots.

One of the highlights of our trip was a day spent at Sudeley Castle, a place filled with centuries of history. We were enchanted by its sprawling gardens, impressive grounds, and the castle itself. There’s so much to see and learn that I could go on forever, but I’ll let the photos speak for themselves!

One of the highlights of our time was a spontaneous trip to the Cotswolds Distillery. My wife and I had been curious to see what all the buzz was about, and we were not disappointed! Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, the distillery offers an intimate and welcoming experience. We took part in a guided tour, learning about the process behind their award-winning gin and whisky. Of course, the best part was sampling the goods. We left with a bottle of their signature dry gin, a wonderful souvenir to remember the day—and perhaps bring a bit of the Cotswolds spirit home with us!

On our final day in Broadway, my daughter, Ebba, joined us after her adventures in Bath. We made one last visit to Broadway Tower before ending our day with a hearty meal. Our favorite dining experience had to be at The Horse and Hound, where the service was outstanding and the food simply delicious. Donning our newly acquired British sweaters and vests, we fit right in at this cozy pub, soaking in the warm, friendly atmosphere.

Next, we’ll be picking up my son, Aidan, and heading off to the grand finale of our adventure—Castle Combe, the crown jewel of the Cotswolds.

Here are a few photos I managed to take of some of the birds visiting our backyard in Broadway :)

Off to the Cotswolds

A Journey Through History and Beauty

About a year ago, I was chatting with my mom about our bucket list of dream destinations, and she mentioned the Cotswolds. I’d never heard of it, but as she shared stories about all the famous movies and shows filmed there, it became clear that this was a place we had to experience. So, we began planning.

To truly embrace the beauty of the Cotswolds, we decided to stay in three different homes spread across the region. This way, we could explore more deeply and capture the unique charm of each area.

Before we set off, my mom came down to Florida for a few days to visit. We had a great time, and she even got a chance to check out Ebba’s new apartment downtown.

The Journey Begins

Our adventure began with a flight to England, though it was just Mom, Malin, and me for the first leg. Ebba went off to Bath for a week to catch up with some friends, and Aidan joined us later from Sweden for the final stretch of the trip.

Our first stop was Sheepscombe, a picturesque village nestled in the Cotswolds. Driving on the opposite side of the road through narrow lanes that barely seemed wide enough for a single car was a nerve-wracking yet memorable initiation into English countryside life. But soon, I fell in love with Sheepscombe’s timeless beauty and friendly locals. We made the most of our time by visiting The Butchers Arms, a charming pub where we enjoyed our first traditional Sunday roast. The friendly atmosphere and shared laughter with other patrons made it an experience to remember.

Exploring Stroud’s Roots

From Sheepscombe, we ventured to Stroud, known for its rich history and artistic community. Our visit wasn’t just about sightseeing, though. We took a trip to the Stroud cemetery, hoping to find the resting places of some of our ancestors. Though we didn’t locate their graves, wandering through the old cemetery was an awe-inspiring experience. The Cotswolds are known for their ancient churches and majestic gravestones, which seem to stand as timeless sentinels over centuries of history.

While in Stroud, we discovered Fat Tony’s, a local favorite offering delicious sourdough pizza and great service—definitely a must-visit for food lovers.

A Journey Back in Time: Painswick

One of the most memorable parts of our stay in Sheepscombe was visiting the nearby village of Painswick. This village has a personal connection for us, as it’s the hometown of some of our ancestors. One of them was a grocer, so we had to snap a picture of my mom standing proudly in front of a local grocery store. It was a surreal feeling to walk the same streets that our relatives had once walked.

Painswick isn’t just full of personal history—it also boasts one of the best British breakfasts we had on the trip. If you ever find yourself in Painswick, make sure to treat yourself to a meal at the beautiful old hotel there. When we return, I’m certain we’ll spend a few nights at this cozy spot.

The quiet charm of Painswick made it a photographer’s dream. We hardly encountered any other tourists as we wandered the village, which made for some relaxed and fun photo sessions.

Rococo Garden: A Plant Lover’s Paradise

While in Painswick, we couldn’t resist visiting the Rococo Garden, a true gem for anyone who loves nature and history. This stunning garden, originally designed in the 1740s during the Rococo period, features whimsical architecture, winding paths, and vibrant plant life. Walking through its meticulously kept grounds felt like stepping into another time. It’s a place where nature and history blend seamlessly, making it a must-visit for garden enthusiasts.

Next Stop: Broadway

With Sheepscombe and Painswick checked off our list, we’re heading to our next stop—Broadway, one of the most famous and beautiful villages in the Cotswolds. Stay tuned for more adventures as we continue exploring this enchanting part of England.

Historical Highlights of the Cotswolds:

  • Sheepscombe: This idyllic village has retained its rural charm for centuries. Its historic architecture and traditional pubs, like The Butchers Arms, are central to its character. The Cotswolds were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1966, and Sheepscombe is one of the many villages that epitomize its unspoiled beauty.

  • Stroud: Once an industrial town during the 18th and 19th centuries, Stroud became known for its woolen mills powered by the area’s fast-flowing rivers. Today, it is a center for arts and culture, drawing artists and creative minds from across the UK.

  • Painswick: Known as the "Queen of the Cotswolds," Painswick is steeped in history. It became a prominent wool town in the 15th and 16th centuries, and its stunning churchyard, with its famous yew trees, has drawn visitors for centuries.

  • Rococo Garden: Designed in the mid-18th century, Rococo Gardens were created for pleasure and entertainment, showcasing ornate and playful styles that contrasted with the formal gardens of earlier periods. Painswick Rococo Garden is one of the few remaining examples of this style in England.

A Wild and Wonderful Reunion in Upstate New York

Barnyard Bliss with My Brothers

This summer, my brothers and I decided to reunite in the heart of Upstate New York where my brother Mathew lives. Hunter jetted in from sunny Mesa, Arizona, while I flew in from Orlando. We booked a quirky converted barn set on over 100 acres of pure adventure. From open fields to dense woods, our days were filled with exploring, spotting owls and hawks, and marveling at local birds and deer. It felt like stepping into our own nature documentary!

Vermont Ventures

One day, we crossed state lines to visit Jamaica State Park in Vermont. Our hike through the park was nothing short of spectacular, with nature showing off its best. Post-hike, we hit up Manchester, Vermont, where the local shops tempted us with all sorts of goodies. We couldn't leave without snagging a heavenly blackberry and blueberry pie. Back at the barn, we fired up the grill for a steak feast and indulged in that pie while the sunset painted the sky in breathtaking colors.

Fair Fun and Pub Hopping

The next day, we dove into the excitement of the Saratoga County Fair. I discovered the ultimate treat: a maple milkshake! The fair was a blast, filled with adorable animals and nostalgia. Later, we embarked on a midday pub crawl in Saratoga, sampling local brews that hit the spot. The day ended with us lounging at the barn, watching the sunset and a parade of Canadian geese flying overhead—a truly serene moment.

Lake George Adventures

Our final full day kicked off with breakfast at Lake George, where I couldn't get enough of those pancakes with local syrup. After fueling up, we rented a boat and hit the water. Lake George's beauty left us awestruck, with its shimmering waters and picturesque islands. Wildlife encounters were plenty, adding to the day's magic. We lunched at a local brewery, enjoying delicious food and craft beers.

Historic Fun and a Beautiful Goodbye

We made a pit stop at the Fort at Lake George, where we were treated to a cannon and musket firing show—a blast from the past, literally! That night, we grilled burgers and savored our last meal together under the open sky. Hot air balloons drifted overhead, making our farewell dinner feel like a scene from a movie.

Until Our Next Adventure

Parting ways was bittersweet, but our trip was packed with laughter, adventure, and unforgettable moments. Our Upstate New York reunion was the perfect blend of wild escapades and relaxing downtime. I’m already counting down the days until our next epic adventure!

Before the Storm

There's something magical about the early morning hours, especially when you're out in nature with a camera in hand. This morning, I decided to rise with the sun and head to one of my favorite spots, Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. The forecast predicted a storm rolling in later in the day, so I knew I had a limited window to capture the serene beauty before the weather turned.

As the first light of dawn began to illuminate the landscape, I found myself surrounded by a symphony of bird songs. The air was cool and crisp, and a gentle mist hovered over the water, adding an ethereal quality to the scene. Armed with my Sony A9III and my new 300mm 2.8 lens, I was ready to capture whatever wildlife came my way.

The variety of birds at Lake Apopka never ceases to amaze me. I spotted Great Blue Herons, Anhingas, and countless smaller wading birds, all going about their morning routines. The stillness of the early morning made it easy to get close without disturbing them, allowing for some truly intimate shots.

As I wandered further along the drive, I stumbled upon a dramatic and somewhat grisly scene. An alligator, lurking just below the surface, suddenly surged upward and caught an unsuspecting bird in its powerful jaws. It was a stark reminder of the circle of life and the raw, untamed beauty of nature. The sound of the bird's distress calls echoed across the water, and I could hear other birds responding with alarmed cries from nearby reeds.

Despite the impending storm, the morning remained calm and filled with incredible photo opportunities. I took advantage of the soft, diffused light to capture some stunning images of the birds in their natural habitat. The anticipation of the approaching storm added a sense of urgency and excitement to my shoot, knowing that these moments of tranquility would soon give way to the fury of nature.

As the first dark clouds began to gather on the horizon, I reluctantly packed up my gear and headed back. The experience of photographing birds in the early morning light, witnessing the raw power of nature, and hearing the chorus of life around me was both humbling and exhilarating.

There's a unique beauty in capturing these fleeting moments, knowing that each photograph tells a story of a specific time and place. This morning's adventure at Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive was a perfect reminder of why I love getting up early and immersing myself in the natural world, camera in hand.

Until next time, keep exploring and capturing the wild wonders around you.

Sunrise at Lake Apopka

There's something magical about waking up before dawn and heading to Lake Apopka Wilderness Drive for sunrise photography. Even though driving through this stunning location is reserved for weekends, walking the deserted road on weekdays offers a serene and peaceful experience that's truly unmatched.

As the first light begins to break, I make my way down the quiet path, my Leica Q3 in hand. The calmness of the morning is palpable, with only the soft sounds of nature to accompany me. The horizon starts to glow with hues of pink and orange, and I find the perfect spot by the water to capture the reflection of the sky. The stillness of the water mirrors the vibrant colors, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene that seems almost surreal.

With the sun rising higher, the lake comes to life. Birds begin their morning routines, flitting and playing across the water's surface. The tranquility of the moment is perfect for capturing the serene landscape, each shot a testament to the peaceful beauty of nature waking up.

Then, with my Sony A9III and 200-600mm lens ready, I spot a Great Blue Heron. It stands tall and majestic, its keen eyes scanning the water for breakfast. With a quick, decisive motion, it snatches a fish from the water. I manage to capture the exact moment the heron holds its catch, the fish wriggling in its beak. The clarity and detail of the shot bring the scene to life, highlighting the grace and skill of this incredible bird.

These early morning excursions to Lake Apopka remind me why I love photography. The solitude of the deserted road, the quiet moments of reflection, and the excitement of capturing wildlife in action all come together to create an unforgettable experience. Every sunrise offers a new perspective, and I can't wait to see what the next one will bring.

Backyard Bird Photography in Winter Garden, Florida

Living in Winter Garden, Florida, offers a unique advantage for bird photography enthusiasts like me. The subtropical climate, lush greenery, and diverse bird population make it a paradise for capturing stunning avian moments. Equipped with my trusty Sony A9III and the versatile Sony 200-600mm lens, my backyard has transformed into a personal wildlife haven.

The Perfect Setup

The Sony A9III is a powerhouse for bird photography. Its lightning-fast autofocus and impressive frame rate ensure that I can capture even the most fleeting bird movements. Paired with the Sony 200-600mm lens, I have the flexibility to photograph birds from a distance without disturbing their natural behavior. This combination allows me to capture sharp, detailed images of various bird species, from the delicate hummingbird to the majestic hawk.

Early Morning Magic

Early mornings are my favorite time to shoot. The soft, golden light enhances the colors of the birds' feathers, creating a magical atmosphere. Birds are most active during this time, making it easier to catch them in action. I set up my camera on a tripod near bird feeders or flowering plants, where birds are likely to visit. Patience is key; sometimes I sit quietly for hours, waiting for the perfect shot.

The Diversity of Backyard Birds

Winter Garden is home to a plethora of bird species. Cardinals, blue jays, woodpeckers, and finches are regular visitors. On lucky days, I spot rarer species like the painted bunting or the red-shouldered hawk. Each bird presents a unique challenge and opportunity, whether it’s capturing the swift flight of a hummingbird or the intricate patterns on an owl's feathers.

Tips for Successful Bird Photography

  1. Know Your Subjects: Understanding bird behavior helps predict their movements, making it easier to capture stunning shots.

  2. Be Patient: Birds are unpredictable. Sometimes, waiting quietly is the only way to get the perfect photo.

  3. Use Natural Light: Early morning and late afternoon provide the best lighting conditions.

  4. Stay Steady: A tripod helps keep the camera stable, especially when using a heavy lens like the 200-600mm.

  5. Blend In: Wear neutral colors and avoid sudden movements to prevent scaring the birds away.

Final Thoughts

Practicing bird photography in my backyard has been a deeply rewarding experience. It’s not just about capturing beautiful images; it’s about connecting with nature and appreciating the incredible wildlife around us. With my Sony A9III and 200-600mm lens, I’m always ready for the next avian adventure right here in Winter Garden, Florida.

A Morning at Orlando Wetlands Park

There's something magical about waking up before the sun and heading out to Orlando Wetlands Park. The serene stillness, the crisp morning air, and the anticipation of capturing the first light of day make the early rise worthwhile. Equipped with a Leica Q3 and a Sony a9iii paired with a Sony 200-600mm lens, I set out to document the beauty of this natural haven at sunrise.

The Leica Q3: A Companion for Wide-Angle Wonders

Arriving at the park just as the sky begins to blush with the first hints of dawn, I reach for my Leica Q3. This camera, with its superb image quality and fast 28mm f/1.7 lens, is perfect for capturing the expansive landscapes and the ethereal quality of the morning light. As I walk along the trails, I frame shots of the mist rising off the water, the silhouettes of trees against the brightening sky, and the tranquil reflections that seem to hold the secrets of the morning.

The Leica Q3’s compact form factor and intuitive controls make it easy to handle in the low light conditions, and its ability to capture fine details ensures that every nuance of the scene is preserved. Each click feels satisfying as I document the soft transition from night to day, highlighting the park's natural beauty in its purest form.

The Sony a9iii with 200-600mm Lens: The Power of Close-Ups

As the sun inches higher, the park comes to life. Birds begin their morning songs, and the wetland's wildlife starts to stir. This is when the Sony a9iii paired with the Sony 200-600mm lens becomes indispensable. This combination offers an incredible reach and fast autofocus, essential for capturing the dynamic movements of birds and other animals from a distance.

I find a spot near a patch of tall grasses where herons and egrets are known to gather. The a9iii's burst mode allows me to capture sequences of a heron taking off, each frame crisp and full of detail. The 200-600mm lens brings these distant subjects into sharp focus, making it possible to see the intricate patterns on their feathers and the intensity in their eyes.

The Joy of Early Morning Photography

Capturing the Wild at Disney

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

is a magical place where the wonder of Disney meets the thrill of an African safari. This trip, I brought along my trusty Sony A9III paired with the impressive Sony 200-600mm lens, ready to capture every breathtaking moment.

The Perfect Gear for the Perfect Shots

The Sony A9III is a beast when it comes to speed and performance, making it ideal for wildlife photography. Pair it with the 200-600mm lens, and you have a powerhouse setup that lets you zoom in on the tiniest details without sacrificing image quality.

Early Bird Gets the Worm… and the Best Photos

We started our day bright and early, aiming to catch the morning light and the animals at their most active. The Kilimanjaro Safaris were our first stop. The 200-600mm lens allowed me to capture the subtle details of various animals and the fierce gaze of the predators basking in the sun. The autofocus was lightning fast (most of the time:), ensuring I didn’t miss a moment.

Close Encounters of the Feathered Kind

Next, we headed to the bird show, where birds swooped and soared all around. With the A9III’s incredible burst mode (20 frames per second!), capturing birds mid-flight with perfect clarity was effortless.

Lunch at Tiffins – A Culinary Safari

After a morning of exhilarating photography, it was time to refuel. Tiffins, Animal Kingdom’s newest restaurant, was the perfect spot. The decor alone is a feast for the eyes, with artifacts and artwork inspired by global expeditions.

We enjoyed a delicious meal that included unique starters, mouth-watering main courses, and exquisite desserts. Every bite was an adventure, much like the park itself.

Back to the Wild

Reenergized, we headed to the animal trails. The lens’s versatility was incredible, letting me switch from wide shots of the lush environment to close-ups of the animals’ piercing eyes in seconds.

Final Thoughts

A day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with the Sony A9III and 200-600mm lens is a dream for any wildlife photographer. The combination of cutting-edge technology and the park’s incredible wildlife makes for an unforgettable experience. And with a delicious meal at Tiffins to top it all off, this adventure is one for the books. Whether you're a seasoned photographer or just starting, this setup will help you capture the wild in ways you never thought possible. So pack your gear and head to the kingdom – the animals are waiting!

Black Bear wilderness

Venturing into the heart of Florida's natural landscapes, I recently explored an absolute gem known as the Black Bear Wilderness Trail. This trail offers an immersive experience into the wild, providing a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility, ideal for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

From the moment we started our hike, the trail promised an encounter with Florida's diverse wildlife, and it did not disappoint. Though the elusive black bears remained out of sight, the trail was teeming with a variety of other incredible wildlife. We spotted alligators lurking in the marshes, great egrets gracefully navigating the waters, and wood ducks adding a splash of color to the surroundings. Raccoons peeked from the tree lines, while ospreys and glossy ibises soared above. The area was also a haven for bird watchers with sightings of white ibises, red-shouldered hawks, re-bellied woodpeckers, Carolina wrens, northern parulas, and plenty of vibrant northern cardinals. A highlight of the trip was the multiple encounters with barred owls, which I had long hoped to photograph.

Equipped with my Sony 200-600mm lens, I was able to capture stunning, detailed images of these majestic creatures. The clarity and range of this lens brought the intricate features of the wildlife into view, making every shot memorable. Alongside, I wielded the Leica Q3, a marvel for on-the-go photography. This compact camera proved its worth by delivering high-quality images without the bulkiness typically associated with such technology. The Leica Q3’s ease of use and exceptional output has reignited my passion for photography, making it a constant companion on my hikes.

New Found Love

Moving to Florida has transformed my life in countless ways. I never imagined how deeply I would fall in love with this place. Since relocating here, I've developed a passion for photographing birds and wildlife. Below are some of the shots I've captured recently.

Florida is an absolute playground for bird enthusiasts and shutterbugs, offering a spectacular array of avian species just waiting to be captured on camera. With its diverse landscapes, from lush wetlands to sandy beaches, Florida is a prime spot for both native and migratory birds.

Imagine capturing the flamboyant Roseate Spoonbills, their vibrant pink feathers contrasting starkly against the verdant marshes, or the regal Bald Eagles as they soar sky-high in a display of sheer majesty. The Everglades, a UNESCO World Heritage site, serves as a backdrop for the mysterious Snail Kite and the vividly hued Purple Gallinule, turning every photo into a vibrant work of art.

For those who venture into the serene wetlands, there’s the statuesque Great Blue Heron and the dynamic Ospreys, masters of the dramatic dive. Beachgoers might snap the speedy Sanderlings darting along the shore, or the stately Piping Plovers in their coastal realm. Meanwhile, the dense mangroves might just reveal the elusive Mangrove Cuckoo or the striking Green Heron.

Every nook of Florida offers a chance to witness these winged wonders amid their natural splendor, making it a stellar destination for anyone passionate about bird photography. Whether you're trekking through the backwaters or scanning the skies from the beach, Florida’s birdlife promises not just photos, but stories of nature’s awesome beauty.

A good excuse to visit New York

New York City

is more than a backdrop; it’s a stage for the dramatic, the unexpected, and the awe-inspiring. If you’re visiting the Swedish Embassy or any other Embassy like I was, you’re perfectly placed to dive into a photographic journey that captures the essence of this iconic city. Here’s your guide to snapping the coolest shots of NYC while you’re in the embassy’s neighborhood.

Early Morning Magic

Beat the sunrise and the crowds. The early morning light in Manhattan is like liquid gold, perfect for catching the towering skyscrapers bathed in a soft, warm hue. It’s peaceful yet powerful—a side of the city few are awake to see.

Architectural Eye Candy

Around the Swedish Embassy, the architecture is a feast for the lens. From the ornate facades of historic buildings to the cutting-edge designs of modern skyscrapers, every corner offers a visual banquet. Get creative with angles and compositions to turn ordinary structures into extraordinary photo ops.

Street Scenes that Pop

New York’s streets are alive with color and motion. Ready your camera for high-energy snapshots of urban life: think yellow cabs zipping by, stylish pedestrians, steam rising from street vents, and neon lights flickering to life. It’s the unscripted moments that often tell the most compelling stories.

Icon Hunting

Nearby landmarks are irresistible subjects. Grand Central Terminal, Bryant Park, and the Chrysler Building are just a short walk away. These icons are not just photo subjects; they're characters in their own right. Explore them from different vantage points to capture their unique personalities.

The Night Shift

When the sun sets, the city lights up. Now’s your chance to play with reflections and neon lights, capturing the city’s transformation into a nocturnal playground. Long exposures can turn moving lights into streaks of color, and the contrast between shadows and illuminated areas creates a moody atmosphere.

Be Street Smart

While it’s tempting to get lost in the viewfinder, remember to respect the area around the Swedish Embassy. Diplomatic spaces can be sensitive, and some might have restrictions on photography. A quick check for signs or asking for permission can save you hassle later.

New York City never stops, and every moment presents a new opportunity for the perfect shot. Visiting the Swedish Embassy puts you at the heart of the action. So charge your camera, lace up your walking shoes, and get ready to capture the coolest, most vibrant visuals of NYC. Let the city inspire you, and who knows? Your next shot could be the one that defines your visit.
